Brainstorming ideas for film opening (Drama or Romance)
For our film opening, my group and I want to focus on either drama or romance, since those genres fit well with the kinds of stories teens usually relate to. Both genres give us a chance to build emotion, show character relationships, and use visual storytelling, without needing a complicated plot in the first two minutes of the film. They also give us a lot of creative freedom with location, lighting, and mise en scene, because we do not need action scenes or complicated twists to make the opening interesting. Instead, we can rely on mood, character expression, and visual storytelling.
One idea for a drama opening is to follow a character dealing with personal pressure or emotional conflict. This could be shown through simple everyday moments like getting ready, sitting alone, or walking through a quiet space while their thoughts build up. Using close ups, natural lighting, and meaningful props could help hint at what they are going through without explaining everything directly. The main focus would be on creating a mood that feels honest and relatable.
For a romance opening, we could focus on two characters who clearly have feelings for each other but have not expressed it yet. The opening can take place in a park, a cafe, a library, or any setting that creates a warm and soft atmosphere. Medium shots, warm colors, and small interactions like soft glances or shy smiles would help show their connection building up. The goal would be to build up on chemistry visually rather than relying on a long dialogue
As we start production, each group member will take on different responsibilities, like one person for directing, editing, acting and so on. We will also blog weekly about our progress and individual contributions. This will help us track how our ideas develop and how the final opening comes together.
