In the extract, Agent Carter is shown as a capable and skilled women, but the men in her workplace underestimate her, reflecting sexist attitudes, the restrictions of a male dominated environment, and how gender roles shape power in the 1940's. In the beginning, the cutaway scene of her with Captain America shows her wearing bold red lipstick, symbolizing that she holds the power and confidence. However, in the office, she is not wearing red lipstick, suggesting that her authority is ignored in this space. This visual detail highlights how her power is affected by her environment 

In the office, her boss speaks to her in a dismissive and condescending tone, showing that she is undervalued despite her competence. The men rush out on a mission while Carter is left behind doing paperwork. This contrast is emphasized through a close up of her frustrated expression and a long shot of the men moving quickly, showing how she is sidelined. Later, when the loud red alarm goes off, the sudden sound signals danger, and Carter reacts quickly, filing the mission report, writing that 3-5 men are needed, and then crossing it off before deciding to go on the mission herself. This moment shows her asserting control even when men will not give it to her. 

Camera movements further highlights the gendered power dynamics. Pan shots following the men convey urgency and seriousness, while Carter’s isolation in the darker office space emphasizes her being overlooked. By focusing on her reactions in contrast to the men’s actions, the extract communicates how the workplace underestimates her. This connects with the feminist media theory, which argues that women in media are often shown as overlooked or pushed into secondary roles, even when they are more capable 

The extract also reflects its social significance by showing post WWII gender expectations. After the war, women who had proven themselves in skilled jobs were pushed back into rookie positions, and carters experience mirrors this historical reality.

Overall, the extract presents Carter as a strong and competent woman whose authority is constantly undermined by a sexist environment. Through visual cues such as the use or absence of red lipstick, sound, and camera work, the audience sees the contrast between her abilities and limitations placed on her, showing how media texts can critique the gender inequality of their time.

In this blog, I will be exploring different camera movements, showing how each one can change the way we see a scene. I’ll explain what each shot does, how it affects the audience, and why it’s used in filming Tilt: The shot begins at the student’s feet and tilts upward, capturing her hands as she struggles to choose a book. By leaving her face out of frame, the tilt emphasizes her hesitation through gesture and movement rather than expression. Depending on the pace, the shot can serve different purposes. At normal speed, it presents an ordinary moment, while in slow motion, it builds suspense and highlights the difficulty of her choice. Even without words, you can feel the support between them through their body language and how they lean toward each other. The black‑and‑white filter adds to the mood, making the scene feel heavier and more focused on their emotions instead of the background. The eye‑level angle keeps everything honest and simple, almost like you’re witnessing the moment in real time.
