0:00–0:22 -- Establishing Shot:

The opening shows Hawkins National Laboratory at night, surrounded by darkness. The wide, high angle shot makes the building seem isolated and cut off from the outside world. This creates a tense, secretive atmosphere and suggests to the audience that something dangerous could be happening inside.

0:23–0:45  -- Tracking Shot
A scientist runs down a hallway, and the camera follows him in a smooth tracking shot.  The audience is positioned to sympathize with his fear, while the movement of the camera mirrors his frantic pace, heightening suspense. The shallow depth of field keeps the focus tightly on the scientist while the background remains blurred, emphasizing his vulnerability

0:46–1:05  -- Medium Shot
As the scientist rushes into the elevator and presses the buttons, the camera follows him in a handheld medium shot. The shakiness of the camerawork mirrors his panic and lack of control, putting the audience in his perspective. This unsteady movement builds suspense and makes viewers feel just as trapped and desperate as he is.

1:06–1:15  -- Tilted close up shot
The camera shifts to a tilted close-up of the scientist’s face as he looks upward in fear. The framing makes his face appear upside down, symbolizing his loss of power and disorientation. When he is suddenly pulled upward by an unseen force, the audience is shocked and unsettled, fully realizing the danger that was foreshadowed earlier.

1:30–1:38 -- Wide Shot
The scene cuts away from the lab to a wide shot of a suburban house, where a garden hose sprays water onto the lawn. This everyday image feels peaceful and routine, creating a strong contrast with the intensity of the lab sequence. The shift in setting signals to the audience that the focus is moving from danger to the normal lives of the town’s residents, while still keeping a sense of unease lingering beneath the surface.

1:39–2:00 -- Medium Shot
Inside the basement, the camera uses medium shots to show the boys, as they argue over their Dungeons and Dragons game. The framing lets the audience see both their expressions and body language, making their frustration and suspicion clear. This camerawork helps introduce the main characters and gives viewers an early sense of their personalities, while the tense mood of the game hints at the bigger dangers to come.
